As junior physician and later as consultant and senior physician for internal and intensive care medicine I have worked for many years in Berlin community hospitals (ICU, normal ward, emergency department, emergency ambulance).
In the course of the years I realized that - despite all efforts - the treatment of patients with severe sepsis and septic shock has only rarely been successful. Although scientific research proved successful in Jena, it became increasingly clear that the problems and concerns of sepsis survivors and their relatives in terms of longterm sequelae had not been sufficiently considered so far.
That's why I decided to start a patients inititiave together with Hubert Grönert in 2005. In order to further strengthen self-help the members of this initiative founded the "German Sepsis Aid" (DSH) on September 5th, 2007. The DSH is the first self-help group for sepsis worldwide.
The DSH has made huge efforts so far. Our counselling services for example which we provide almost around the clock for sepsis patients and their relatives, is unique in the world.
Let's keep going, we still have a lot of work to do! Then we might be as succesful as other medical fields already are thanks to the efforts of the patients representatives.
